The Enduring Power of Wellness

John Saville is a builder. Just one conversation with him and he’ll build you up, leaving you feeling happier than before and ready to take on the world. There’s no question that this gift has been a large part of his success as an on-air radio personality, a DJ, and a physical fitness trainer—all jobs that benefit from his ability to build positivity and health in those he associates with. On top of all that, he’s a championship bodybuilder. Did we mention that John is 59 years old? (And turning 59 this month—happy birthday, John!)? This is one builder who is building an astonishing legacy.

While most people in their late fifties are slowing down and eyeing retirement, John and his wife Patti aren’t ready to downshift any time soon. When looking at peers their age, Patti can’t help but notice that many of them tolerate declining health without question. “It’s like their attitudes are geared toward aging,” she says. “Our philosophy is totally the opposite of that.”

John’s always been athletic. As a teen in Guilford, Connecticut, he was part of his high school’s very first football team—and became his high school’s first all-state football player and high school all-American athlete. He was captain of the football team and wrestling team. His penchant for baseball did not go unnoticed either, and he was scouted by the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher.

With so much going for him athletically, John surprised his family and peers when he swapped athletics for arts during his senior year of high school. “I wanted to pursue other parts of school,” he says. “I didn’t want to be labeled a jock. I had to do what was in my heart, and not do what other people expected.” John branched out into band, choir, and theater—where he landed several leads in school plays.

John always knew he wanted to go into the radio broadcasting business, and he’s been behind the mic since his freshman year at college. “I have worked every single major format in the state of Connecticut,” he says. “I worked in New York City for a while. I love what I do.” And it shows—he is currently the most listened-to afternoon radio personality in the Hartford metropolitan area.

As if a stellar radio career wasn’t enough to keep John busy, his mobile DJ company has him playing the hottest music at various events most weekends, he is an in-demand MC throughout Connecticut, and he was the head trainer at the biggest gym in the area for a time.

Like her husband, Patti is passionate about health and wellness. She always valued good health, but her commitment deepened after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. She was a single mother with a 15-year-old daughter. “It came out of the blue,” Patti says. “I didn’t have any family history.” After undergoing a double mastectomy, Patti started down the long road of recovery. “I was very lucky,” she says. “My journey made me a much stronger person than I ever was before.”

PUMPING UP
John entered his first bodybuilding competition at age 30, finishing in the top three in his categories. He competed in several competitions during the early nineties. Then, after a decade break, he won a show in Tarrytown, New York. Putting his health first, John seeks out all-natural shows. “The only way I’ll do a show is if it’s all-natural with drug tests, polygraphs, urine tests, whatever,” he says. “It has to be stringent. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I never did drugs. I just believe that is what’s healthy.”

Last November, John needed a challenge. “I felt like I was stuck. I was carrying an extra ten pounds on me. I wanted to tighten up a bit more. I essentially started tightening up my diet just for the sake of being healthier, and Melaleuca products helped with that,” he says. Friends and family suggested he compete again, and though it had been fifteen years since his last competition, he decided to “put on the blinders and go for it.”

The first thing John did was hire two trainers, Chuck Budz and Jim Caputo at Planet Fitness of Branford. When they told John to start doing double workouts, John’s days were already packed with shifts at the radio station, running his DJ business, and training for the competition. “I wondered how I would find the time,” he says. “It was crazy but I did it.” He hit the gym in the morning and again the afternoon, doubling his cardio and increasing his circuit training.

On May 28, 2016, John took first place in the Men’s 50+ Master’s division of the New England Natural Bodybuilding Championship and second place in the 40+ division. A natural athlete who has been bodybuilding for nearly 30 years, John says he’s in the best shape of his life and he gives Melaleuca’s world-class supplements and sports nutrition products much of the credit. “By show time, when I was up on the stage, all the cuts and striations were dead on.* I know for a fact that the products had everything to do with that,” John says. “I really think these products help fight aging process. My endurance is better than it’s ever been. I feel more youthful than I’ve ever felt.”

BUILDING MORE THAN MUSCLES
As familiar faces in the community, John and Patti are walking examples of the Melaleuca lifestyle. They are often asked what they do to look so amazing. After the competition, younger men asked John what his secret was. No one could believe he was 58. John and Patti never miss a chance brag about Melaleuca products. They are products of the products and it shows. “We use the products,” John says. “We keep ourselves fit. We realize that we really have found our home.”

ON MAY 28, 2016, JOHN TOOK FIRST PLACE IN THE MEN’S 50+ MASTER’S DIVISION OF THE NEW ENGLAND NATURAL BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIP AND SECOND PLACE IN THE 40+ DIVISION. ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2016, AT THE OCB ALL-NATURAL BODYBUILDING TRI-STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, JOHN DID IT AGAIN. HE TOOK FIRST PLACE IN THE MEN’S 50+ DIVISION, SECOND PLACE IN THE 40+ DIVISION, AND PLACED FOURTH OVERALL.

“We go out and represent ourselves and Melaleuca in the best possible light,” John says. “We want to be an inspiration and show everyone that you don’t have to look a certain way just because you’re a certain age.”

Since enrolling in 2013, Patti has experienced marked improvements in her health. She knows that Melaleuca’s supplements and non-toxic household products have played a significant role.
“Both of us feel so much better since we switched to Melaleuca products,” Patti says. “Holy cow—my health is so much better than before.”

“This is our preventative healthcare,” John says. “There’s no question about it.”

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF BETTER MUSCLE MASS
At 7 a.m., John is up and has Berry FiberWise® along with the Peak Performance Total A.M. packet and NutraTherm.

For breakfast, he’ll have a veggie omelet made with eight egg whites and one yolk, a sweet potato, and a bowl of oatmeal with Vitality Elevate™ Ultra Performance Protein Shake powder sprinkled on top. “It’s almost like having an ice cream sundae,” he says.

John fuels his workout with an Access® Bar and stays hydrated with Sustain® Sport. Afterward, he’ll finish up with an Ultra-Performance Protein Shake with Amino Boost mixed in. “The whole mix of what’s in Amino Boost is just dead on,” John says. “It’s better than any scientific mix I’ve ever seen before.”

Lunch consists of a big salad with butter lettuce, spinach, kale, and lots of veggies, a drizzle of olive oil, and healthy protein like grilled chicken or salmon.

In the afternoon, John keeps his metabolism going with another Ultra Performance Protein Shake and a salad with chicken.

Dinner is a big meal of grilled chicken, salad, and tasty vegetables, such as grilled asparagus. Of course, John would never forget his Peak Performance Total P.M. packet.

After 7 p.m., carbohydrates are off the menu. For an evening snack, it’s tuna or grilled chicken and a delicious GC Control™ Shake.
